Toward the end of Escape, we are treated to sentimental re-affirmations of brotherly bonding that add very little to this adventure. This was the first Rainmaker Entertainment film theatrically released. The film was released on February 15, 2013. What’s disappointing about so many of today’s animated movies is that even though they run 90 minutes or less, they usually seem padded. Escape from Planet Earth is a 2013 Canadian-American 3D computer animated comedy film produced by Rainmaker Entertainment and distributed by The Weinstein Company, and directed by Cal Brunker. A couple of chase sequences take advantage of the 3-D technology.

Canadian director Cal Brunker provides an amiable spirit for this caper. Escape from Planet Earth is a 2013 3D animated movie produced by Rainmaker Entertainment and directed by Cal Brunker. Visually the film offers modest if colorful pleasures. On Earth, Scorch and Gary encounter a bevy of other aliens, voiced by performers like Jane Lynch, Craig Robinson and George Lopez, with Steve Zahn and Chris Parnell providing additional comic relief as a couple of trailer-park stoners eager to help the aliens. Corddry and Fraser do well with their roles, though Sarah Jessica Parker and Sofia Vergara are wasted as their love interests back home. Ricky Gervais has some droll moments as the voice of the computer assisting the mission, though he’s underutilized. A documentary shown to Scorch and Gary to illuminate the backward nature of life on Earth is a highlight, though the film should have tried to incorporate more of this puckish social satire. The story lurches forward in fits and starts, but there are welcome bursts of humor along the way. There’s a complication in the form of a traitorous bigwig on Baab ( Jessica Alba), who is having a very long-distance romance with the general, at least as long as he wears his Elvis toupee. There’s nothing for you or them to see here except frustration. From that point on, the plot is predictable and undernourished. If you’re looking for something to do with your kids this weekend, take them to the park. It's so boring and listless that I can’t believe so many talented people were a part of it. If there is any money left over, which there shouldn’t be, it should be burned because not even a charity should see a piece of this blood money. They do give a damn, and there’s a reason why they’ll rewatch The Lion King until they’re blue in the face and immediately forget this waste of time even exists.Īs we speak, people involved in this production are currently in court arguing over who should get the profits or lack thereof from this movie. It’s as if someone thought, “They’re kids… so, who gives a damn?” In short, kids do. It’s as if every single person involved thinks children are so stupid that they don’t deserve entertainment with any effort behind it. You know how great children’s movies work on two different levels in order to entertain both kids and adults? You know how mediocre children’s movies work on one level to entertain kids? Escape From Planet Earth doesn’t work on any level, and even worse, it doesn’t seem bothered by that failure. Together, they partner to save babies and fight the more malevolent alien races, but after a falling out, Scorch winds up imprisoned on Earth by the evil General Shanker (William Shatner), and it’s up to the normally reserved and office-bound Gary to save the day. The later is an astronaut and arguably, the most famous member of the blue species. The former is an inventor and proud employee of the Mission Control Department of planet Baab. The basic premise follows two brothers named Gary Supernova (Rob Corddry) and Scorch Supernova ( Brendan Fraser). And the plot, well, multiple paragraphs need to be devoted to that lunacy. Doomsday Machine, also known as Escape from Planet Earth (video title), is an American science fiction film filmed in 1967 but completed without the original cast or sets in 1972. The song choices are misguided and occasionally even uncomfortably disconnected from the action. The jokes are mostly obvious, base level gags that will seem too foolish and immature for any child above the age of four that’s ever been described as “advanced” or “accelerated”. The animation is not bad but still below recent standards set by DreamWorks and Pixar. The characters are poorly conceived stereotypes that lack depth.
